Let me explain Sailor Moon.
No. Too long. I'll summarize. Here's the first season.
Usagi Tsukino is a 14 year old blonde. She's a bit lazy, a breathtaking klutz, really bad in school and owner of the purest heart on the planet. She's also the reincarnation of Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. She becomes Sailor Moon thanks to a talking black cat named Luna (hahaha) who gives her the famous transformation brooch.
Usagi is told she must find the Princess (look in a mirror, toots!) and the rest of the Sailor Senshi so they can defeat the eeeevvvviiiiiilllllleeee *waggles fingers* of the Dark Kingdom. Here are the Inner Senshi, in planetary order:
Ami Muzino, Sailor Mercury. Smart. Very smart. Genius, even. 14, bluenette. No, that's not a miss-spelling. Her hair is blue. She's shy. Her attacks are water based and the weakest. To compensate, she gets the nifty handheld Mercury Computer and a blue-tinted visor to analyze the enemy and find weak points.
Minako Aino, Sailor Venus. 14. Body double for Princess Serenity and Sailor Moon. Leader of the Inner Senshi and the most experienced in fighting. She was Sailor V, costumed crimefighter and idol of Usagi's. She lived for several years in London and returned to Japan after Usagi became Sailor Moon. Her attacks are hearts and lasers and she comes complete with Artemis, a white cat that is Luna's partner.
Rei Hino, Sailor Mars. 14. A strong psychic and miko at a local shrine. She's also the only one with black hair. She picks on Usagi. A lot. The two are infamous for tongue wars, in which both stick out their tongues and whoever keeps it out the longest wins. Her attacks are fire based.
Makoto Kino, Sailor Jupiter. 14. The tallest and strongest. Brunette who wears rose-shaped earrings, even when transformed. She's known as much for her cooking as she is for her fighting and any cute guy automatically reminds her of the Upperclassman Who Broke Her Heart. Her attacks are electric based.
As this is a magical girl series, there must be a romantic interest. Here he is:
Mamoru Chiba, Tuxedo Kamen. 17. He actually has black hair too! Wonder of wonders. Usagi beans him with a test paper in episode one and that sparks the civilian relationship of head-on encounters (no, really. She runs into him or hits him with something off and on for about 18 episodes. It's MAGIC!) and flying insults. Mamoru gives her the "Odango Atama" or "Bun/Meatball/Dumpling Head" nickname that is adopted by Rei. As Tuxedo Kamen, he swoops in and rescues Sailor Moon, usually via a red rose that pierces the ground in front of the Youma of the Week and a dorky haiku that doesn't translate well in English. Sometimes he gets really fancy and uses a extendable cane, which can extend quite a ways. (Hmmm) He has also literally swooped in and plucked Moon out of harm's way. Needless to say, Usagi has a massive crush on Kamen, which makes things awkward when it's revealed that not only is Kamen Mamoru, but he's also the reincarnation of Prince Endymion of Earth, Princess Serenity's love 1,000 years ago. (Yes, that is a reference to the myth of Selene and Endymion, without the whole enchanted sleep problem. They died instead. Fun!)
Season One is "Find the Princess, Find the Ginzuisho (Silver Crystal) and Defeat the Dark Kingdom!" As you already know who the princess is, I'll skip that part. The Ginzuisho is the Stone with the Power, an artifact from the Moon Kingdom safely tucked away inside Usagi until the time was right. That time was just before the Dark Kingdom captured Kamen to turn him into a puppet. Here's the Dark Kingdom Baddies:
Queen Beryl, Leader. She's the one trying to bring back Metallica, the entity of eeevvvviiiilllleeee *waggles fingers* that was responsible for destroying the Moon Kingdom 1k years before. She had corrupted Endymion's Four Generals back then and used them to invade the Moon.
Jadeite, Far East General. He's the first General to gather "human energy" to raise Metallica. He uses a variety of tricks and monsters to drain humans and consistently fails thanks to Sailor Moon, and later Sailor Mercury and Mars. Beryl eventually runs out of patience and seals him in a crystal.
Nephrite, North American General. His job is to find the Ginzuisho and gather energy, with a side order of vengeance for Jadeite. He uses the stars to pinpoint likely targets. He makes the mistake of becoming interested in Naru, Usagi's best friend. Naru crushes hard in return. Nephrite dies in Naru's arms. Whoops.
Zoicite, European General. He picks up where Nephrite left off. He's also a flaming queen involved with Kunzite (unless you're watching the English dub, in which case he is a she. Bastards.). Zoicite is fairly successful, but still ends up dying. Kunzite makes his final moments beautiful. Awww.
Kunzite, Middle Eastern Division. Out for vengeance for Zoicite, he goes all out against the Senshi. He's their hardest opponent and it takes everything the girls have to defeat him. He does die, eventually.
Prince Endymion, brainwashed. Zoicite manages to snag Mamoru and brings him to Beryl. Beryl figures out the reincarnation bit and uses Endy against Sailor Moon. As a Dark Kingdom agent, he throws black roses and uses a sword. The roses occasionally turn red, indicating the internal struggle. Usagi is able to reverse the brain damage just in time to have him killed in front of her. Again. And she doesn't even kiss him!!!!
Metallica, Entity of Eeeeevvviiiilllleeee *waggles fingers*. This is the source of Beryl's power and the driving force behind the destruction of the Moon Kingdom way back when. After Beryl and Metallica plunged the Earth into darkness, they went after the Moon, with the brainwashed Generals at the front. The Senshi died killing the Generals. Rumor has it that prior to all that, the Senshi and Generals were rather...cosy. Endymion tried to defend Serenity and was killed by Beryl for it. Hell hath no fury like a sorceress hyped up on Evil Concentrate and being shown she hath no chance in said hell. Serenity killed herself with Endy's sword. Nice touch. Queen Serenity, ruler of the Moon Kingdom, used the Ginzuisho to seal Metallica away and send her daughter, her guards and Endy into the future to be reborn. She also put Luna and Artemis into coldsleep until the Right Time. That much power was too much even for the Queen, and she died as the Moon died around her.
So that's everyone from Season One. The Senshi, after much detective work and about 40 monsters, figure out where the Dark Kingdom is holed up and decide to invade. Brave girls! They defeat Kunzite and end up at the North Pole. Beryl sends her final monsters out and the Inner Senshi fall one by one. Needless to say, this freaks Usagi right out, but she keeps going. At the hideout, she goes three rounds with Endymion and wins and he dies. Now totally alone, Usagi squares off against Beryl and Metallica. She ends up transforming into Princess Serenity and gets a power boost from the spirits of Endymion and the Senshi. As the Ginzuisho blasts everything in a world-wide radius, she wishes that everyone can live again in peace.
Season One ends with Usagi once again running late for school and being passed by Makoto. Ami, Rei and Minako are shown living their own lives and Mamoru is driving his red sports car. Only Luna and Artemis know what happened, everyone else has forgotten.
I'll write up Season Two tomorrow.
