Hee! Poor Sarah.
Dropped into the world of 1997 1%-ers and flailing about madly. Taking Mamoru's money for a weekend trip, sure, no problem. Being told she has carte blanche by the House of the West for the rest of her stay? Yeah, not so much.
Sarah fastened the string of perfect white pearls around her neck and gave herself one last look-over in the bathroom mirror. It had been...odd, using the Generals as sounding boards to figure out what she was going to wear to meet Lord Fluffy. Odd and at the same time a little bit thrilling. Kagome had excellent taste. Her choices had been a linen pantsuit with a bright green silk blouse and a turquoise leather belt, a blue Vera Wang dress and a pale green cashmere sweater set with a tan pleated crepe skirt. The shoes had ranged from candy red three inch heels to leather ankle boots to dark brown ballerina flats. Sarah had gone with the linen pants, the sweater set, and the red heels. After deciding on the clothes, which had required some modeling changes with four blushing constructs keeping their backs to her, she had explored the bathroom and found a complete set of Sheseido skin and makeup products, along with enough hair style tools, creams, mousse, gels and sprays to stock a Fashion Week stylist station.
"Might as well enjoy it while it lasts," She told her bemused reflection and got to work. Her hair was now curled under at the ends and side parted for a gentle sweep of bangs next to her left eyebrow, her face sensibly made up with gray and tan eyeshadow, mineral powder and a sweep of rose lip gloss, and Wakamiya's pearls. She had managed to fit a pair of gold dangle earrings into her earlobes after a bit of effort. The total effect was sophisticated and Sensible Adult Female. Sarah winked at herself, stuck the lip gloss in her pocket and headed out of the bathroom, trying to balance against the roll of the yacht. Fortunately, the heels were a little chunky.
"How do I look?" She asked the Generals, ranged about the stateroom. They all looked uncomfortable, their old uniforms clashing with the blue and gold fabrics and the rich mahogany furniture and paneling. This ceased to be a problem after she did a three point turn.
"You look ravishing!" Zoicite squealed. Jadeite blushed and looked away. Nephrite grinned and winked.
"It's not what we're used to as court attire, but it seems to suit this modern world," Kunzite announced. Sarah chuckled.
"Thank you all. Now, I'm going to need you to hang out in this bag, please." She held out the cloth bag Wakamiya's pearls came in. "I don't think you'd be comfortable in my purse or communing with the bracelets."
"Must all of us go? Can't one of us stay with you for protection?" Jadeite asked, clenching his fists. The others exchanged knowing looks and returned to stone, one by one. Sarah gave each stone a gentle squeeze before putting them in the bag.
"Jadeite, please tell me what's bothering you. I have an idea, but I want to hear it from you." Jadeite paced the room a few times, then stopped and took her hands.
"My lady, if I was truly a man and gained the Prince's permission, would you have me?" Sarah sighed and shook her head.
"No, Jadeite. For one thing, Mamoru has no say whatsoever in who I choose to court. I am my own woman. I've had to be for three years now."
"But, I would give your children my name! I would protect you!"
"My children have their own names, Jadeite. I am from the future, where women have a lot more rights and freedoms then what you remember. I do not need protecting, despite what happened at Tokyo Station. And most important of all, I Do Not Belong Here. I would not risk you disappearing from this world when Mamoru needs you. I will be taking nothing from this universe with me when I go home. It's safer for everyone that way."
"So, you can give me no hope," Jadeite said, letting go and turning away. Sarah sighed.
"I have no song to give you."
"What of the fox?"
"Shippo? He's probably taken. Every bishi I've met has been. It's not fair, but life isn't fair. I accept this."
"You are a woman of strong opinions."
"I'm responsible. I'm also practical. Those two tend to cancel out wild romantic encounters."
"Do you even have a heart?" Jadeite asked bitterly. Sarah's mouth fell open.
"Wha...?"
"You kissed the hot spring kami. You accepted a gift from her. Do you prefer your own sex, then?" He asked, whirling on her. Sarah blinked a few times, then sighed.
"Jadeite, I accepted Wakamiya's kiss because I knew I would never see her again. That was sayonara, a complete goodbye. The pearls were a reward."
"A reward?" He spat. She frowned.
"Yes. A reward for a job well done, getting Kagura betrothed to Fujin-sama. A matchmaker's fee, if you will. She warned me there will be more from other spirits, which is very kind of them and at the same time very sad, because I cannot keep them. I can't keep any of this," She waved at the yacht, the haute couture. "This is all a pretty illusion, a fantasy being played out. One day I'll wake up back in my world and I will miss it. Fantasies are lovely, but they aren't real life. Certainly not my real life."
"So none of this is even real to you," Jadeite closed his eyes and gritted his teeth. Sarah shook her head, her chest aching for the young man out of time and trapped in crystal.
"It's real the way a vacation is real. A temporary journey into something I don't get to do in my day to day life. I know this is happening and I know I'll keep this entire experience as a treasured memory, but in the end, that is all I will have. Memories, nothing tangible. I won't be able to hold it in my hand or lean against it or smell it or anything like that. It will all be in my head. Don't you think that's punishment enough without having my heart involved?"
"I...I will not appear before you again, Lady Sarah. Farewell." Jadeite reverted, the crystal dropping into the thick carpet. Sarah sighed yet again, bent and picked up the stone.
"As you wish."

Shippo was enjoying a handful of lychee gummies when Reiki emerged from her stateroom. The conversations had been clearly heard by himself and the two wolves. Ginta and Hakkaku wore matching woebegone expressions, hearing Reiki's situation clearly spelled out. Shippo vowed to himself to make sure she took something back with her. Her arrival sent Ginta scrambling for tea while Hakkaku stood and gaped. Shippo gulped down his mouthful and barely fought back the choking response. Sarah walked right up to his bar stool and bowed deeply.
"I apologize for my earlier behavior, Shippo. It was bad form of me to take my fears out on you."
"No offense taken, Reiki. Your fears were understandable. It is my hope I can make the rest of your quest as easy as possible." Reiki rose and studied his face carefully. He quickly checked his teeth for stray bits of candy before grinning at her.
"Does liking the way someone smells count very highly in kitsune culture?" She asked. Ginta dropped the teapot on the bar, sending green tea all over the teak. He and Hakkaku scrambled to clean it up. Shippo slid off his stool and escorted Reiki to the lounge chairs situated just inside the door to the pool deck.
"Foxes are like dogs and wolves in that regard. We rely on scent much more then humans. So, yes. It is."
"Are you mated?" She asked, sitting down and crossing her legs. Shippo caught himself from falling into his chair, just.
"No."
"Do you have someone you're interested in?"
"She died in World War Two," Shippo looked out at the pool, ringed in the family crest.
"Do I smell like her?" His head snapped around. Reiki met his gaze calmly, head cocked slightly, like an inquiring pup. "I know Kagome's history, Shippo. I know all about Kikyo and Inuyasha's teenage idiocy regarding the two. So be honest. Do I smell like the one you lost?"
"Not exactly, but very close."
"Do I look like her?"
"Not at all. Your face is more heart shaped and your coloring is completely different. You're about the same height, but I'm pretty sure you're older."
"I'm 35." She said, challengingly. Shippo nodded.
"Older."
"So, you're not mated, you're not courting anyone and you said I smell really, really good. I can only assume that you're trying to pick me up and that is futile."
"Is it?" He challenged back. Ginta scuttled over, put a teak cup full of genmaicha on the table next to Reiki, the bowl of gummies next to Shippo and fled back inside. Reiki ignored it all to stare into his eyes.
"My heart is not allowed to leap after yours."
"REIKI-SAN!" Ginta and Hakkaku chorused, horrified.
