Weekender in Perspective, Friday
Friday night was Iron Man. My perspective (and probable spoilers) are below.
Now, what I know about Iron Man is the occassional crossover with Spidey and what Wolf had told me. As such, I was the best target audience for the film. A comic book geek who knew the basic outline, but no details.
Robert Downing Jr. was bloody BRILLIANT. Snarky, unpredictable yet completely predictable, it was a joy watching him realize the true impact of his empire and his gritty determination to stop it.
Gwynneth Paltrow carried Pepper Potts beautifully. Equally snarky, if ever so polite about it, devoted to her boss, the only thing I wasn't sure about was the sexual tension. It felt a little forced, until I confirmed with Wolf that yes, it WAS part of the story. Pepper knows Tony so well, she'll never touch him and Tony needs her to survive. Ergo, they love each other, but they'll never DO anything about it, each for their own reasons. Plus, watching Paltrow run through explosions in a little black dress and high heels is always fun. ^_^
The various armors used were wonderful. The CG was flawless, I thought, and I loved watching the supercomputer Jarvis calibrate and upgrade and fabricate while being JUST as snarky as Tony.
I really SHOULD have seen Ubadiah coming as the main villian, it's a classic. But I didn't, and when he admitted it I nodded and said, "Yes, of course. I should have known." This was one of Wolf's biggest complaints; that Ubadiah was a puppetmaster and should not have gotten into the suit. The other biggest complaint was...
Rhodes. Wolf wasn't too happy with the director taking over half of Rhoddy's job by being Stark's driver. Rhoddy wasn't given nearly enough screen time or character development. He should have been the first one to know about the Iron Man project. Although his running around cleaning up after Stark was par for the course.
And yes, I DID love Jarvis and all the quiet humor you got from the various robotic extensions. But the best part was...
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD. They foreshadowed the bejeebus out of it and I STILL didn't catch it because I was watching the characters and not paying quite as much attention to the department name. It didn't help that it sounded bloody awful. Still, an Avengers movie tickles me. Not as much as Dr. Strange, I would have been bouncing around the theater for Strange, but still. Avengers! Thor! Captain America! JACKSON AS NICK SHIELDS!!! *SQUEE*
Next up, Speed Racer and Prince Caspian. Gods, how could I have forgotten Caspian? Reepicheep! Reepicheep! Reepicheep! That very flower of chivalry, all cute and furry and a foot tall with the most magnificent tail ever to grace a mouse. Just don't ever cuddle him, you'll offend his dignity. ^_^
