Joy of Cooking

There are times when I personify Kaoru to Wolf's Kenshin. Srsly. He can make ANY sauce taste good. I'm lucky if I can do it half the time. Poppyseed gravy, no problem. Shepherd's pie gravy? Well, steak doesn't a good base make and I didn't have hamburger, so I made a rue and then used red wine and water to thin it out, added salt, pepper, rosemary, parsley, garlic and ginger.

Yeah, the ginger was a mistake, but without it the gravy tasted sweet, not savory like I wanted. Kevin, after dinner, recommended the caraway seeds or mustard seeds. WTF?

My herb/spice rack is sadly lacking in the good stuff. I lust after Janny's AeroGarden.

I have not, thankfully, lost my baking skills. While I doubt I will ever see a 9x11 cake come out of my oven level, not caved in the center, at least it baked properly, after much fiddling with the stove. That thing has a 10 degree range and requires careful tweaking of the oven dial to get that range around where I want. And I didn't forget all of the basic butter frosting recipe of my maternal unit's, just the milk. ^_^;

Ah well, at least it came out the way it's supposed to taste and I have leftovers for crackers, an absolute MUST when making frosting. IDK's cake is chocolate with yellow frosting and a lot of green sprinkles to kindof-sortof look like a football field. Cause, y'know, the Steelers are going to The Game and we've gotta represent. It's for the children. His birthday's tomorrow. Inauguration baby. Lucky me.

Wish I could bake more often. That was always one of my favorite stress relievers. But, it's so hard to really bake for just one.

(Still cheering for the Cards, though... sorry.)

No problem. I blame the French.

Poppyseed gravy?

Not what the original recipe called for, something I faked when I didn't have cream of chicken soup. Zhade called it "poppyseed gravy", what it was was a creamy chicken casserole with poppyseeds and I made the cream sauce from scratch.
