Some thoughts on "District 9"
Aug. 16th, 2009 11:34 amJohannesburg? Ok, then.
There's a political statement here.
It's the MNU! They have blue blood! (Only Kyther will get this reference. It's sad I was thinking it EVERY SINGLE TIME the corporation was mentioned, about every five minutes.)
An investigation? Betrayal? Oh, you're dead. You're so dead.
24 hour eviction notice on what amounts to a cheap refugee camp? Yeah, I'd call that a whitewash too. Why do I get the feeling this is happening now in Africa? To humans, not ETs? (No, the aliens are not ET. However, the word "prawn" makes me think of food, not sentient, intelligent beings. So I will not use it.)
There! See? You're dead.
This is taking too long. Why aren't you dead yet?
OOOOOOOOOHHHHH. You're not dying. Whokay then.
Ok, see, that was just stupid. Knock the poor guy out first! Idiots.
No, sorry, still no sympathy for you, Mr. Hybrid.
Oh good, maybe some good will come of this mutation. Help the aliens go home, learn some compassion. I haven't forgiven you that popcorn comment about killing alien infants.
Wow, Dr. Manhattan started something with the human explosion bit. Maybe I should keep count. *quickly loses count*
OH DEAR GODS YOU ARE A SELFISH IDIOT!!! GO WITH THEM, DON'T KNOCK OUT THE CAPTAIN WHO CAN ACTUALLY HELP YOU!!!!
There, see? You deserved being shot out of the sky. You don't deserve to be dissected by, well, everyone, but you did deserve to be shot out of the sky.
Wow, that's a smart alien kiddo.
FINALLY!!! Mr. Hybrid is getting the message.
Ok, the merc commander kindof sortof deserved being torn to pieces by the aliens. He was a prick. Wonder if they'll accept Mr. Hybrid, who's just as much of a prick, but did do some intelligent, compassionate things there at the end.
And the answer is yes. It's sweet he's making gifts for his wife.
On the whole, the movie was depressing. The documentary feel of it was clever, and the political undertones were more like screaming overtones, but that's ok. It's a thinking movie, one designed to make you have serious discussion afterward. Like most sci-fi movies, there's a lot of violence and blatant exploitation. Humanity has a long way to go. The sad thing is, I can see this happening to any extra-terrestrial desperate enough to land on Earth. We're still abusing ourselves so much, any "other" cannot expect better treatment.
