Near as I figure, Lupin is pretty much a Japanese version of Scooby Doo. At any rate, the rote formula they use for each episode kinda reminds me of the formula used for the other... I mean, if nothing else you'd think the cop'd learn after the first dozen or so tries that handcuffing Lupin once you've caught him is pretty much futile.
I can see how the first episode of FLCL would put you off tho... all this profoundly wierd shit going on with little/no explanation. But it *does* have all the classic elements of anime - one hapless schmo with multiple women fighting over him and vying for his attention, powers he can't control or understand, an alien, giant robots... and it has a GUITAR! How cool is that? Granted, the incomprehensibility factor throws things off, but you start to catch up some in subsequent eps.
