"A normal amount. Why?" Patrick asked. I shook my head and took Sari's arm. I was not going to embarrass her.
"We may need something a wee bit stronger, Oh Newly Appointed Royal Barkeep," Sari said, nodding. Patrick's eyes lit up and he bowed with his hand over his heart.
"It is an honor and a pleasure to serve the Queen of Mercia." He rose and grinned. "Do I get a golden corkscrew?"
"Let's let these two plot, love," I said, leading her out of the kitchen. Behind us I heard Patrick dissecting the menu and arguing wine pairings with Eva. I'm going to have to have a word with those two later.
My mom and most of my siblings were on the wrap around porch. As I walked Sari outside, I saw Bu and Kaaren getting out of their car. Bu waved while Kaaren shouldered a large leather case.
"Hi, Kev! Welcome home!" Bu called.
"Hi, Bu! Kaaren, you can set up in the foyer or the living room, whichever will be more comfortable for you!" I called back. Sari's fingers tightened slightly.
"Bu? Rick's Bu?" She whispered.
"That was over ten years ago, love. Bu's been with Kaaren for a while now."
"Oh. Okay." The new arrivals came up the walkway, greeted by certain family members as well. Bu put down two canvas shopping bags to collect hugs.
"Hello, Sari! It's very nice to finally meet you! Rick speaks very highly on your behalf."
"Remind me to spike his tea next week," Sari said, hugging Bu and bowing to Kaaren. "I'll collect hugs from you after you're set up, Madame Minstrel."
"Oh, you're too kind," Kaaren said, blushing slightly. "I have a concert in two weeks and Kev graciously agreed to let me practice here today."
"What do you play?"
"This is a dulcimer, but I also play piano and I sing." Sari gave me a wry look.
"If this keeps up I'll have an entire Court!"
"Oh! Are you allied with Bermania?" Bu asked. Sari shook her head.
"Not as of yet, but given the situation, I will petition for an audience to discuss trade relations. My kingdom is a subspace pocket approximately in the geographical area of Mercia in what is now the United Kingdom. At last estimate we were about five dimensions away from this one." She grinned. "High Magic and High Science work side by side in my world. It's fun."
"Hey, Kev! Don't be hogging her all day!" My sister Drya called.
"Coming, Little Sister!" I nodded to Bu & Kaaren. "Eva and Patrick are in the kitchen."
"Okay, I'll join you after I set up, Bu," Kaaren said. The couple headed inside and I escorted Sari across the porch to meet my family.
