Taking a deep breath, she unlocked the front door and stepped inside, wrestling with canvas bags of groceries. Her living room greeted her with warm, earthy colors, comfy sofa and chairs to snuggle into, a flatscreen television over the fully functioning wood fireplace and mismatched computer desks.
She grinned as she passed through the sunny dining room. Her old ceramic and wood table was sporting a cheerful runner made from remnant fabric, a miniature rose (still thriving after three years), and bright green succulents were teasing the bamboo window shades from their shelves. The old front door, now blocked by the table and chairs, and the still-functioning back door looked delicate with lace curtains and fake ivy garlands.
Her smile grew a bit bigger when she entered her kitchen and set the bags down. Pale gray cupboards, crisp white walls with a bright red stripe along the top, black and stainless steel appliances. Her countertops, once a black and rust granite laminate, now were a stronger, custom faux granite. Even the old linoleum had been replaced with terra cotta-colored ceramic tile and a few sisal grass mats.
She unpacked her bags, tied on her favorite apron (okay, her only apron), and set about chopping CSA-provided veggies for a simple pasta dinner. The kids were out playing with friends, leaving her alone with her trusty old laptop playing jazz in one corner, a glass of wine and dinner to make. Eventually, they would return, along with her fiance, and everyone would sit down to eat. Afterwards would be video games, an evening stroll, and bedtime. But for now, the house was hers. Her own cottage. It was nice. It was good. It was...exactly what she wanted.
