I feel sorry for the lady who works the fish counter at my local grocery store.

Disclaimer: I love Good Eats, Alton Brown is the Demi-God of Cooking, and the episode about lobsters was fascinating. The kiddos and I make it a point to stop and admire the bugs.

Today there were many, many lobsters in the tank. Big lobsters! Little lobsters! So. Many. Lobsters. Stacked like cordwood. I felt sorry for them, so sorry. So. Very. Sorry. Their plight moved me to save some. Cuteness insisted on one with purple bands and we got a second to make sure I had enough meat. I took them live, along with the salmon head and tail. About half the bill today was fish and shellfish. I Do Not Care.

I found the appropriate Good Eats episode and watched it while the lobsters hung out in the sink. I took one, thanked it for its sacrifice, and cut into the head.

It took multiple cuts before I was sure it was dead. I got the steam pot going with gravel instead of river rocks and popped it in. Followed the steaming directions and took it out, shiny and red.

The second lobster I blessed, killed more efficiently, and tossed it into the pot. The heat was too high, I overcooked that one. I couldn't scoop the innards out properly, but I did my best. I extracted the tail meat, the leg meat and smashed the claws to get the last bits. Everything went into a bowl, along with some of the juices from the cutting board.

After I washed my hands (my shorts no doubt reek of lobster juice), I tore up the meat, mixed in a little mayo and made a sandwich with cucumber slices.

DELICIOUS!!!!

I know what I did wrong, but overall, for being Very Brave and sacrificing the lobsters with the proper respect and method, I made a decent lobster salad!

The salmon head and tail will be made into soup.

I am so pleased with myself!
