“Good evening everyone,” Sher said once they were on stage. “I must ask, has anyone here heard of Trigun?” I blinked at her. Trigun? Oh, surely not! I glanced around, seeing no hands and hearing no calls of acknowledgement. Ken-chan leaned over.

“What is she doing?” He whispered.

“A cosplay skit,” I whispered back. Sher was looking around worried.

“No one? Oh surely, some of you have! Anyone? Anyone at all?”

“What’s the matter, insurance girl?” Rae asked, sounding JUST like Vash.

“Vash, no one here has heard of you.”

“Really? Are you sure? How strange,” He looked around. I made a chirping sound, which made everyone laugh.

“Well, in that case, let me introduce myself. I’m Vash, Savior of Gunsmoke, lover of women everywhere, bodyguard extraordinaire, immortalized in song…”

“Savior of Gunsmoke is a bit much, don’t you think?” Sher cut in. Rae waved his hand.

“I stopped Knives, didn’t I? That counts. Where was I? Oh yes, immortalized in song, a great dancer and very handsome, if I do say so myself. Hey there, beautiful.” Rae hopped off stage and targeted a slinky-looking blonde.

“You wouldn’t happen to need the services of a legendary gunman, would you? I’d keep you safe from anything, from evil bandits to gun-toting priests! Well, maybe not the priest, cause he’s a friend of mine. OUCH!” Sher was pulling on his ear.

“Please excuse him. He hasn’t had his donuts yet today,” She said, walking Rae back on stage by his ear.

“Hey, that’s right! You promised me donuts if I came with you tonight. Where are they? You haven’t forgotten your promise, have you?” Rae went down on his knees and gave Sher a puppy dog face, complete with quivering lip. I nearly choked on my soda. Michael and Brandon were gaping at the stage and Ken-chan was snickering.

“Wow, insurance girl, I didn’t know you liked that brand of underwear. That’s really nice,” Rae said, cocking his head to get a better look. Sher kicked him over and planted her heel in his chest.

“How…dare…PERVERT!!” She yelled and began hammering her foot into his chest. Rae whimpered, curled up in a ball and rolled away. Sher tossed her hair back.

“Now, as I was saying. My name is Meryl Stryfe and I’m an insurance investigator for Bernardelli Insurance Society. I must warn you that Vash the Stampede, the humanoid typhoon, has a knack for finding trouble, so close contact with him is prohibited. He’s classified as the first ‘human disaster’ and my company is no longer responsible for damages.”

“Hey there gorgeous, you wouldn’t happen to need a bodyguard, would you?” Rae was on the other side of the room now, schmoozing a redhead. Sher’s head twitched a few times, then she stormed off and dragged him back, Rae howling with indignation.

“Come on. I’ll get you those donuts,” She said tiredly into the mike.

“Oh good. While we’re at it, we should stop at that underwear store you shop at. I think Millie might like something new.”

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!” Sher chased him off the stage and back to our table amid shouts of laughter and a lot of applause. I threw a coaster at her when she sat down, catching her right in the neck.

“Serves you right. How DARE you do Meryl when I don’t have that costume made yet?”

“Oh, relax, Candy. I’m sure you’ll be done by October.”

“We’re doing RahXephon in October!” I protested. Sher shrugged and sipped her drink. I threw up my hands and turned to face the stage. A Harry Potter skit, of all things! That one got a lot of applause. Another poetry reading, I think it was Shelley, then Ken-chan’s name was called. Someone asked him about his guitar.

“I’m afraid I didn’t bring it tonight, so you’ll just have to settle for my singing,” He said into the mike, getting a few laughs.

“Hopefully some of you will recognize this.” He shoved his hands into his pockets and began singing. I frowned, not recognizing the song until the refrain and his eyes moved to me. Lay Your Hands On Me. His glasses had slid down and once again I was caught. I shivered, unable to break the bond his eyes made. He blinked, turning back to the audience and I slumped in my chair. Sher smirked, Brandon and Michael were rubbing their hands. Rae just shook his head and grinned at me. I weakly returned the grin. Turning back to Ken-chan, I met his gaze again and felt the grin morph into a full smile. Ken-chan smiled back as he finished the song. The audience cheered and he turned over the mike to the next participant. Brandon and Michael stood and clapped him on the back, much like they had the last time. Ken-chan shrugged them off and took his seat, reaching for his water. I fiddled with a napkin, unable to meet anyone’s eyes. His golden orbs were still floating in my mind, demanding attention. Did he…mean that? Have I really helped him? I know he said he had stopped grieving for Hitomi-chan. Funny I should call her that in my mind when I’ve never met her and never would. Still, anyone that captured Ken-chan’s heart would be very special. I found myself in an odd predicament: simultaneously envying and admiring a dead woman. I briefly wondered if they had kissed and promptly shredded my napkin. Stupid, Candy. Really stupid. Unless her father had been uber strict, of course they would have! And really, why was I thinking about kissing Ken-chan?
