Yes, I know I'm a day behind, but that's okay because nobody on my friends list posted about it that I can recall and it doesn't matter if they did because I saw it with my own eyes and I can't believe it and I hope it's done properly and OOOOOOOOO!!! I can't WAIT!!!

That does make things more difficult. I didn't follow FF as closely as I did Spidey or the X-Men, so I didn't mind the 're-do'.

What got me with Superman Returns is the kid. Come ON! HOW can Kal'el safely breed with a human female? Humanoid = Human! And forgetting the whole super seed thing, I just don't see Clark Kent having an affair with Lois Lane. He's called the Blue Boy Scout for a reason. It's not in his nature, IMHO.

I don't remember much of the '78 film, just bits and pieces, like him making the planet go backwards to reverse time and save Lois. I prefered Batman Begins too as a re-establishment of the character. Superman Returns was more of a 'Hey, let's tell the same story all over again and make him a dad to boot!' Bah.

Superdad!

Ah, but in Superman II Clark revealed to Lois that he was Superman and flew her to his Fortress of Solitude. There, he talked to the "spirit" of his mother, telling her he loved Lois. She told him that in order to be with her he had to lose his powers. He went into a special crystal chamber and was bombarded with some kind of red radiation (Krypton sun, maybe?) and became "human". He slept with Lois after that.

(Later, when he learned that General Zod and the other Phantom Zone prisoners were on Earth, he went back to the Fortress and reversed the process to fight them. When they fought him there, they forced him to go through the process again, but he cleverly reversed the machine so that while he was safe in his chamber, the three Kryptonian criminals lost their powers. He subdued them and sent them back to the Phantom Zone. He later used a "super amnesia kiss" to remove Lois' memories of his secret identity. Yes, lame and cheesey, but hey, so were the Superman comics throughout the 70s.)

Superman Returns takes place approx. five years after the events in Superman II, hence the kid - which, I believe is the ONLY place in Superman lore where he and Lois have a child.

But yeah, you do have to suspend a lot of disbelief, especially the whole Kryptonian-mating-with-an-Earthling thing. Personally, I like the description of Superman/Lois sex in Mallrats:

T.S. Quint: But they're engaged.
Brodie: Doesn't matter, can't happen.
T.S. Quint: Why not? It's bound to come up.
Brodie: It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child?
T.S. Quint: Sure, why not?
Brodie: He's an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him.

Really.

I got the impression Superman Returns was supposed to be a remake of the original, not a continuation of the movie series that conveinently forgets Superman 3.

And yes, that scene in Mallrats is exactly what I'm talking about. Apparently there's an essay floating around somewhere titled "Man of Steel, Women of Tissue Paper" that goes into the medical details. I wanna read.
