General genres:
Mech
Fantasy
Post-apocolyptic
Crime'n'punishment
Chibi
Period
Hentai
Romance
I'm pretty sure all series and movies will fit in one of those five main categories. Now, let's subdivide them. As my anime experience is limited, *sob* I'll do my best.
Mech:
Gundam. Yes, it is it's own subdivision.
Robotech. See above.
Police Mech. Dominion Tank Police Force, Patlabor, etc.
Alien Mech. Transformers. Hush. They are from another planet. I saw that episode!
Fantasy:
D&D: Lodoss War, Slayers, etc.
Magical Girl: Sailor Moon, Princess Tutu, etc.
Horror: Vampire Hunter D, Wicked City, etc.
Game: Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.
Post-Apocolyptic:
Anything where Neo-Tokyo is invovled. Evangelion, Blue Submarine #6, etc. Yes, I know Evangelion also falls in the Mech category. I think it's more appropriate here.
Horror. I know there's movies like this out there. There has to be.
Crime'n'Punishment:
Comedy: Lupin III, Under Arrest, etc.
Non-mech police: Witch Hunter Robin, etc. It's not magic. It's mutation.
Chibi:
Kids: Hamtaro, etc.
Period:
Shogun Japan: Ninja Scroll *drool*, etc.
WW2: Nazi Death Rape Machine. No, I don't remember the title.
Modern: Lain, etc.
Hentai:
I know it's out there.
Romance:
Comedy:Ranma 1/2, etc.
Serious: Have yet to see one.
Anything to add, subtract or rearrange, feel free!
