The Monkey King! Every Chinese child knows about the Monkey King!

Ok, that kid looks awfully familiar.

Yes! The Hero kid from Sky High! Who apparently is an idiot. Oh well.

Yay! Jackie Chan!

Hero boy STILL doesn't get it? Geez.

Yay! Jet Li!

I know this is all choreographed, but damn, they're fast.

Wolf: "There's always someone with ass-length white hair in kung fu movies." Me: "And they're evil." Wolf: "Yes, ass-length white hair in kung fu movie means evil."

No, no, no. There's too many cooks in this kitchen. This is a direct violation of my Fairy Tale Rules! Jackie: "We kill each other afterward." Me: "Fair enough."

Yay! Hero boy figured it out. And now he's going to do something stupid. *sigh*

Yay! Monkey King!

Before you set off on the path of vengance, you must first dig two graves.

Now, see, you should be worried about those eyes. Them's fighting eyes. See? Told you. Glad to see he remembers.

Yay! Reincarnation!

As kung-fu movies go, it wasn't bad. I would like to think that as a teenager, I would have caught on faster then Hero-boy, but I can't say for certain. Wolf expressed delight in action sequences he can actually follow, rather than the CG so-fast-it-makes-him-sick action sequences we've been seeing lately. (Yes, I'm looking at YOU, Transformers) We also agreed that Western understanding of Eastern martial art philosophy comes directly from Bruce, even if he did get gypped when TV execs gave Kung Fu The Series to David Carradine. At least David got it, and spent his life promoting the understanding beneath the high kicks. Two or three episodes of Kung Fu, the Legend Continues taught me the basics. I'll never forget the rice paper walk.

We liked this movie soo much we bought it.

I thought it was a good fairy tale.

It is a good fairy tale. I guess I'm a bit too purist, I'm disappointed when a kung fu story brings in a white boy to teach a basic lesson of philosophy. They didn't NEED Hero-boy, any modern Chinese teenager would have filled the role without it feeling like pandering to the West.

This is one of the main reasons I love "Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon" so much. There were no foreigners, the kung fu was teh awesome, and the female leads were central to the story instead of being simple love interests.
