Failure is always an option.

I'm not sure WHAT happened, but when the smoke alarm went off this afternoon, I thought it was a dying battery issue and changed the battery.
Then I walked into the kitchen.
My red microwave door was open, there were large scorch marks on the interior, and Sheshanagi's hot pack was happily burning away. And the kitchen was full of smoke.
Queenie is sick. She did not smell this coming.
I got the hot pack out of the microwave, spilling lots and lots of burned and burning grain in the process, and dumped it in the sink, which is full of dirty dishes, and put the flaming fabric out with a quick shot of water. I then swept up the black grain, wincing at the scorch marks now on my linoleum, and dumped them in the trash. I also opened both main doors, two windows and turned on the living room fan to clear the smoke.
I tested the other appliances on the same circuit as the microwave and they're ok. So it was contained to the microwave and that is kaput. I will need to buy a new microwave sometime this week. Hopefully I can find a small red one similar to the one I had.
The irony of my watching Mythbusters when this happened is not lost on me.
