"Hayashimizu-san?!" Atsunobu Hayahismizu, Student Council President of Jindai High, blinked and turned around. Several feet behind him was Mamoru Chiba, well respected member of Moto-Azabu Private High School and a petite brunette with rectangular glasses not unlike his own. He nodded, his fan folded closed and resting just underneath his chin, waiting for the pair to catch up.
"Chiba-san, it is a pleasure seeing a fellow student of high standing. How have you been? Have you chosen a college?"
"I am well, Hayashimizu-san and I have my college choices narrowed down, thank you."
"You are entering the medical field, yes?"
"Yes and I've heard you are considering a career in politics." The fan snapped open.
Astute
"I have learned much in my obligations on the council." Atsunobu glanced down at the young woman, whose eyes were glued to his fan. "May I ask, Chiba-san, the name of your charming companion?"
"This is Sarah-Neesan." Sarah...neesan? The lady blinked her eyes up to his face, smiled and bowed politely. How odd.
"I was unaware you had any living relatives, Chiba-san," Atsunobu put the barest emphasis on "living". Sarah...neesan's smile shivered, becoming a little less sad.
"Cousin by marriage to Usagi-chan, adopted big sister by mutual consent with all parties, unofficially, of course. It's very nice to meet you, Hayashimizu-san."
"Likewise. Your accent, you are...American?"
snap
Curious
"I hail from New York State, not to be confused for New York City, which is its own biosphere." Again the faint shiver of lips, brightening the smile. "I have heard much about your school, Hayashimizu-san. Is there still a...Sagara Sousoke enrolled there?"
snap
Suspicion
"I was unaware Mr. Sagara was known outside of the country." Sarah...neesan shifted her posture. Atsunobu recognized the pose as one Mr. Sagara took while reporting. He had called it "at attention".
"Military brats tend to watch out for each other. I grew up Navy." Her head cocked slightly, eyes zeroing in on his fan. "Is that...the talking fan you were speaking of, Mamoru-kun?"
"Talking?" Atsunobu snapped the fan closed, eyes narrowing on his associate. Chiba-san scratched the back of his head.
"Sarah-neesan loves fans."
"I collect them. I knew of the harisen, a slapstick device for comedy routines, and when I asked Mamoru-kun if he knew of any strange Japanese fans, he mentioned yours. He said the kanji on it changes." The smile shivered again, became slightly satisfied. "It is wonderful to see it in action. If I swear to handle it as a delicate porcelain vase, may I hold it please?" Atsunobu's mouth twitched ever so slightly down along the edges. His fan was personal, an extension of himself, not unlike a samurai's katana. One did not just hand one's weapon over to anyone who asked! Sarah...neesan nodded.
"I withdraw my request and beg your forgiveness," She said, bowing lower. "It was presumptuous of me to ask for such an intimate thing." Atsunobu looked at Chiba-san.
"Your adopted sister is very astute and incredibly polite for an American."
"Yes, she is." Chiba-san's voice was full of pride! The file on him would have to be updated and one created for this young woman. He would speak to Ren Mikihara about it tomorrow. Now, though, his curiosity was fully piqued. Just how much DID she understand?
"Sarah...neesan,"
"Sarah-san, please, Hayashimizu-san. My family is complicated and you have enough complications with Sagara-san and Chidori-san." He nodded. If she knew that much about Sagara and Chidori, then he needed more information and quickly.
"Given the circumstances, I will allow your touch just this once." He flipped the fan and held it out base first. Sarah-san bowed again and used both hands to gently lift the fan from his fingers. Slowly, carefully, she unfurled it.
Welcome The smile shivered twice, became almost...happy. How interesting. She showed it to Chiba-san, then gently turned it over.
Reiki The smile vanished and she blinked several times. Atsunobu's eyebrows flickered slightly upward. Reiki? Was the fan actually addressing her? Sarah-san closed the fan, took two slow breaths and opened it again.
Void Walker
"Um, Mamoru-kun? I...I'm afraid I don't recognize this kanji," She said, showing him.
"It says 'Void Walker'," Chiba-san's eyes widened and he paled. Sarah-san closed the fan, held it sideways in both palms, and offered it back. Atsunobu took it and snapped it open.
Amusement
"Thank you so very much, Hayashimizu-san. I am honored by your trust," Sarah-san said, bowing even lower. Chiba-san bobbed his own bow, took his adopted sister's hand and led her away, rattling off something about meeting Usako. Atsunobu remained where he was, glaring at his fan. He could swear the thing was laughing!
